What is Hemp Seed Oil
Hemp seed oil is a great source of high-quality nutrients and has a long history of use in Eastern culture as a multi-purpose natural remedy. Technically a nut, hemp seeds are very nutritious. They have a mild, nutty flavor and are often referred to as hemp hearts. Hemp seeds contain over 30% fat. They are exceptionally rich in two essential fatty acids, linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3). They also contain gamma-linolenic acid, which has been linked to several health benefits. Hemp seeds are a great protein source, as more than 25% of their total calories are from high-quality protein. That is considerably more than similar foods like chia seeds and flaxseeds, whose calories are 16–18% protein.
Hemp seed oil has a 3:1 ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids, a balance that has been shown to support heart health and promote proper cardiovascular function. These nutrients play a role in many biological processes and may help prevent a number of heart complications.
Hemp is a rich source of gamma-linoleic acid (GLA), an omega 6 fatty acid. Studies have shown that GLA is useful in helping the body balance hormones. For women, supplementing with GLA can help ease premenstrual syndrome. They may also reduce cramping and pain during menstruation.
The essential fatty acids in hemp seed oil have been shown to promote healthy flora in the intestines and support immune system response and function. This can be very helpful during the cold and flu season when viruses are running rampant at school, work, and in everyday social interactions.
Hemp seed oil contains a variety of plant sterols. These compounds have been shown to reduce inflammation – a common factor in many different diseases. A study published in the Free Radical Biology & Medicine Journal conducted by the University of Mississippi Medical Center found that hemp seed oil was helpful in lessening the impact of inflammation on oxidative stress, reducing the risk of organ damage and dysfunction.
Kick-start Weight Loss
Substituting hemp seed oil for other oils in your diet can even help you lose weight. This effect is due in part to its rich nutrient content and healthy fatty acids. Also, according to multiple studies, including a 2007 study published in the Journal of Nutrition, the oil’s GLA content supports weight loss. GLA works as a natural appetite suppressant to help you feel full longer. GLA also reduces sugar cravings to help lower your overall calorie intake, as well as to curb inflammation.
